Gosset Celebris Rosé 2008

2008

Gosset Celebris Rosé 2008 is a rare vintage Brut rosé from Gosset’s prestige Celebris collection, combining Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in a release of just 15,000 bottles. Long ageing and a distinctive balance of fruit, savoury spice and freshness make it a serious choice for a special occasion.

Celebris Rosé occupies a particularly select place in the Gosset range. The 2008 is one of only four vintages of this prestige rosé recorded across roughly a quarter of a century, making the year on the label central to its appeal. It is a Champagne for someone who wants a rosé with the character of a particular harvest, rather than a consistently reproduced house expression. The blend is led by Chardonnay, at 72%, with Pinot Noir accounting for the remaining 28%. That proportion is worth noting: the wine belongs firmly in the rosé category, yet its construction gives Chardonnay the leading role. The 2008 was disgorged in April 2021, allowing for an extended period of cellar development before release. Production was limited to 15,000 bottles, another reason to pay attention to the exact vintage when comparing offers. For the drinker, the attraction lies in the meeting of ripe fruit and more savoury detail. Strawberry and dark cherry sit alongside citrus, a suggestion of mint and peppery spice, while a saline impression brings contrast to the finish. Rather than relying on colour or fruit alone, the wine offers different points of interest as a glass develops. It is well suited to being served with food and given the time normally reserved for an ambitious white Champagne. Gosset has a history reaching back to 1584 in Aÿ, and the modern house continues to place considerable importance on freshness alongside time in the cellar. Celebris shows the more selective end of that philosophy. Buyers already familiar with Grande Réserve or Grand Rosé will find this a different proposition: a particular vintage, a carefully defined blend and a more limited release. Serve it in a generous tulip-shaped glass rather than a narrow flute. Roast duck, mushroom dishes or fine charcuterie would be attractive partners, though it also has enough to occupy a tasting on its own. If buying for a cellar or as a gift, check that the listing specifies 2008: Celebris Rosé is not an interchangeable series of identical bottlings. This is a compelling rosé for a Champagne lover who values maturity, individuality and the nuance that comes from a prestige cuvée made only occasionally.
