Burtin

Editorial profile

Maison Burtin was founded in Épernay in 1933 by Gaston Burtin and remains based at the Château des Archers, 22 rue Maurice Cerveaux. Today it sits within the LANSON-BCC group and is led by Etienne Maffre, who has directed the Maison since the beginning of 2024.

The public-facing premium signature of the house is Hommage à Gaston Burtin. That name is not a separate producer in the Champagne.co sense; it is the principal premium brand through which Maison Burtin now presents the cuvées linked most directly to its founder's legacy.

Why this producer matters

Burtin is especially interesting because the operating-house structure is broader than the consumer-facing Hommage range. Maison Burtin has long had production responsibilities beyond a single label, including Alfred Rothschild & Cie., and from 1 January 2026 it also became the operating home for Heidsieck & C° Monopole following LANSON-BCC's acquisition of that historic brand.

That makes brand separation essential. Hommage à Gaston Burtin, Alfred Rothschild & Cie. and Heidsieck & C° Monopole are not interchangeable cuvées or synonyms. They are distinct consumer identities handled within the wider Maison Burtin production structure.

Sourcing and cellar approach

Hommage à Gaston Burtin is built from broad grower sourcing rather than from one published estate-vineyard footprint. The current Brut draws on 50 crus, while the Extra-Brut and Blanc de Blancs 2018 each use fruit from 20 crus. The 2015 Vintage narrows the selection to six villages, heavily weighted toward Grand and Premier Cru sources.

The house's current range material identifies two technical themes across the Hommage wines: no malolactic fermentation and the use of a perpetual reserve / solera-style reserve as an important component of the multi-vintage blends. Meunier also plays a prominent role in the core range rather than being treated as a minor supporting grape.

Current and meaningful cuvées

  • Brut — the core Hommage multi-vintage wine. The current 750 ml technical record uses a 2019 base, 53% Meunier, 26% Chardonnay and 21% Pinot Noir, with 49% reserve wines from the solera, at least three years' ageing and 8 g/L dosage. The producer notes that base year can differ in other bottle formats, so these figures are specific to the documented 750 ml release.
  • Extra-Brut — current technical data: 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Meunier and 20% Chardonnay, base 2019, sourced from 20 crus, aged for at least three years and dosed at 5 g/L.
  • Rosé — current release: 73% Meunier, 16% Chardonnay and 11% Pinot Noir, with part of the Pinot Noir vinified as red wine, base 2020, 20% solera reserve, at least three years' ageing and 8 g/L dosage.
  • Blanc de Blancs 2018100% Chardonnay, sourced from 20 crus including Sézanne, Bethon, Villedommange, Bisseuil and Grauves; more than four years' ageing and 8 g/L dosage on the current technical page.
  • Vintage 201553% Pinot Noir and 47% Chardonnay, sourced from six villages with 88% Grand and Premier Cru fruit, aged for more than seven years and dosed at 6 g/L on the current release page.

Heidsieck & C° Monopole integration

LANSON-BCC completed its acquisition of Heidsieck & C° Monopole at the end of 2025 / beginning of 2026. The group's current statements say that operational integration became effective on 1 January 2026 and that the Heidsieck & C° Monopole brand is now developed within Maison Burtin.

Heidsieck & C° Monopole remains its own historic Champagne brand, founded in 1785. It should never be presented as part of the Hommage cuvée ladder or as a renamed Burtin wine. The correct relationship is operational: Maison Burtin now provides the technical, oenological and commercial platform for the brand within LANSON-BCC.

Champagne.co analysis

Maison Burtin is best understood as a production house with several distinct brand responsibilities, while Hommage à Gaston Burtin is the clearest expression of the Maison's own founder-led identity. That distinction explains why a consumer looking only at the Hommage range sees five wines, while the wider operating company has a much larger role inside LANSON-BCC.

Within Hommage itself, the range has a coherent structure. Brut uses the broadest sourcing and highest proportion of reserve wine, Extra-Brut lowers dosage and changes the grape balance, Rosé leans strongly into Meunier, Blanc de Blancs 2018 isolates Chardonnay, and Vintage 2015 shifts to a dated Pinot Noir/Chardonnay blend from a tighter group of crus. The house's no-malolactic and perpetual-reserve framework provides continuity across those different positions.

Buying guidance

Brut is the correct starting point for understanding Hommage à Gaston Burtin because it shows the broad sourcing, high Meunier component and substantial perpetual-reserve contribution in the core blend. Extra-Brut is the relevant comparison for lower dosage and a more even Pinot Noir/Meunier balance.

Choose Rosé for the Meunier-led rosé interpretation, Blanc de Blancs 2018 for the pure-Chardonnay vintage route, and Vintage 2015 for the mature dated blend. Readers interested in Heidsieck & C° Monopole should treat it as a separate historic brand now operated within Maison Burtin, not as a step above or below Hommage in one shared hierarchy.
