Christian Gosset is an independent grower based in Aÿ-Champagne, where his current agricultural business operates from 3 rue Jeanson. After roughly 35 years working alongside his brother at Gosset-Brabant, he began his own personal project in 2015, with a first harvest in 2016. The present EARL Christian Gosset was created in April 2016 and remains active.

The project is centred on Aÿ Pinot Noir, with Chardonnay from Chouilly providing the principal white-grape counterpoint. Its roughly five-hectare vineyard base also extends across Premier Cru sites associated with Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Dizy and Avenay-Val-d’Or. The wines move from numbered A-series blends to individual named parcels, making release identity and place more important than a single fixed house formula.

Christian Gosset is entirely separate from the historic Maison Gosset in Épernay. The shared surname reflects Champagne family history, not common ownership or one commercial enterprise.

Why this producer matters

The project translates long experience into a deliberately small, site-focused range. Rather than creating a new brand around one generic blend, Christian Gosset built the portfolio around Aÿ Grand Cru Pinot Noir, then set it against Chardonnay from Chouilly and a series of individual lieux-dits.

The cellar follows the same logic. Parcels are harvested and handled separately, with native-yeast fermentation and long lees ageing. The A-series wines allow assemblage across Grand Cru material, while Loiselu, Les Pierres Robert, Croix-Courcelles and Sorangeon narrow the focus to named places.

Vineyard and farming identity

The personal project works around five hectares across Aÿ and Chouilly Grand Cru and additional Premier Cru territory in the surrounding Vallée de la Marne. Aÿ supplies the central Pinot Noir identity. Many of the Pinot Noir vines are more than 45 years old, with individual parcels such as Loiselu planted in 1963.

The estate vineyard programme is HVE Level 3 certified and is described as farmed without herbicides, pesticides or fungicides. The vineyards are also worked with practising-organic methods, but no blanket organic-certification claim is made without a separate certifier record.

Cellar and winemaking

Individual plots are picked and vinified separately. The parcel wines are fermented in 228-litre French barrels, generally using native yeasts and spontaneous malolactic fermentation, while the A-series blends can use enamel-lined vats before assemblage.

The wines receive a minimum of around three years on lees before disgorgement. Fining, filtration and cold stabilisation are generally avoided in the current programme. Dosage is low and varies by release: the current parcel wines range from Brut Nature to Extra-Brut, while the A-series specifications change with each iteration.

The numbered A-series is important because each number identifies a new assemblage rather than a permanent non-vintage recipe. Blend, base harvest, dosage and disgorgement therefore belong to the individual A-release.

Current and meaningful cuvées

• Brut A05 — 85% Pinot Noir from Aÿ and 15% Chardonnay from Chouilly, aged about 36 months on lees and dosed at 1 g/L for the current release.
• Rosé Extra-Brut A05 — 87% Pinot Noir from Aÿ and 13% Chardonnay from Chouilly, with around 10% Aÿ Coteaux Champenois red wine incorporated into the rosé. The current release spends about 36 months on lees and is dosed at 3 g/L.
• Loiselu 2020 — an Aÿ Grand Cru Blanc de Pinot Noir Extra-Brut from an east-facing Pinot Noir parcel planted in 1963. The wine is fermented in 228-litre barrels and represents one of the clearest mature-vine expressions in the range.
• Les Pierres Robert 2020 — 100% Pinot Noir from a 0.32-hectare Aÿ Grand Cru parcel planted in 1990, with loamy topsoil over chalk. The current release is barrel fermented, aged 36 months on lees and dosed at 1 g/L.
• Croix-Courcelles 2020 — an Aÿ Grand Cru named-parcel Extra-Brut, offering another site-specific comparison within the producer’s Aÿ range.
• Sorangeon 2020 — 100% Chardonnay from an east-facing lieu-dit in Chouilly Grand Cru, planted in 1963 on chalk. The wine is barrel fermented, spends 36 months on lees and is bottled Brut Nature with no dosage.

Christian Gosset is best understood as an Aÿ Pinot Noir project with a parcel vocabulary. The A-series gives the broad view: Pinot Noir dominates, Chardonnay from Chouilly adds contrast, and each numbered iteration records a new assemblage. The single-site wines then pull that structure apart.

Loiselu and Les Pierres Robert show how two Aÿ Pinot Noir parcels can be kept distinct by vine age, exposure and soil. Sorangeon changes both grape and village, moving to Chardonnay on Chouilly chalk. That makes it especially useful as a counterpoint rather than simply another prestige bottle.
