Joseph Perrier

Editorial profile

Joseph Perrier is a family Champagne house founded in Châlons-en-Champagne in 1825. Six generations later, the house remains family-led and continues to age its wines in its historic Châlons cellars.

The current portfolio is organised around four clear groups: the Cuvée Royale collection, a small set of parcel wines, the prestige Joséphine cuvée and the bicentenary Cuvée 200.

Why this producer matters

Joseph Perrier is a useful example of a historic maison whose range is relatively compact and easy to read. The house’s regular collection covers the principal dosage and colour categories, while the parcel wines and Joséphine move toward more specific origins and longer ageing.

The house also celebrated its bicentenary in 2025 with Cuvée 200, a numbered vintage wine from the 2015 harvest, linking the modern range directly to the 1825 foundation date.

Vineyard and sourcing

The house blends fruit from a broad set of Champagne villages and also works with family vineyard holdings. Current technical material for Cuvée Royale Brut cites more than twenty vineyards, including Cumières, Damery, Hautvillers and Verneuil.

Because origin changes by cuvée, village and parcel details are most useful when tied to the exact wine. The parcel collection is particularly explicit in that respect, separating Le Ciergelot, Les Chalmonts and La Côte à Bras.

Cellar and winemaking

Joseph Perrier’s technical choices vary across the range. The current Cuvée Royale Brut is documented at 35% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 30% Meunier, with about 20% reserve wine, 36 months’ cellar ageing and 7 g/L dosage.

Vintage and prestige bottlings follow their own specifications. Cuvée Royale Vintage 2018, for example, is currently 81% Chardonnay and 19% Pinot Noir, aged 84 months on lees with 2 g/L dosage. Those figures belong specifically to the 2018 release.

Current and meaningful cuvées

The Cuvée Royale collection currently includes Brut, Brut Nature, Blanc de Blancs, Rosé, Vintage 2018 and Demi-Sec.

The parcel collection currently comprises Le Ciergelot, Les Chalmonts and La Côte à Bras, each intended to focus attention on a particular family site rather than on the broad house blend.

Cuvée 200 is the bicentenary release from the 2015 harvest and is offered as a limited, numbered edition.

Joséphine 2014 is the current prestige vintage. The house specifies 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir from Ambonnay, Sacy, Cumières, Bergères-lès-Vertus and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, with 108 months of ageing and 5 g/L dosage for this exact release.

Champagne.co analysis

Joseph Perrier’s range works well as a progression from house blend to place and vintage. Cuvée Royale establishes the regular style; the parcel wines narrow the geographic focus; Cuvée 200 adds a commemorative vintage dimension; and Joséphine sits as the longest-aged prestige expression.

Buying guidance

Cuvée Royale Brut is the logical starting point. Brut Nature is the clearest comparison for dosage, while Blanc de Blancs and Rosé provide straightforward stylistic alternatives.

For a more specific origin, move to one of the parcel wines. Vintage 2018, Cuvée 200 and Joséphine 2014 should always be bought and described by their exact release, since blend, ageing and dosage are vintage-specific.
