Le Brun-Servenay
Editorial profile
Le Brun-Servenay is a family grower based in Avize on the Côte des Blancs. The present house was formed in 1965 through the marriage of two established winegrowing families, and the producer traces the modern succession through Gérard Le Brun, Patrick Le Brun and now Gauthier Le Brun.
The estate currently states that it farms seven hectares. Around 80% is Chardonnay in Avize, Cramant and Oger, while the remaining Pinot Noir and Meunier are on slopes around Épernay. Some vines are more than 70 years old and the oldest approach a century, giving old-vine Chardonnay a meaningful place in the house identity.
Why this producer matters
Le Brun-Servenay combines a compact grower scale with holdings in three of the Côte des Blancs' Grand Cru villages. Chardonnay therefore sets the centre of gravity, but the black-grape parcels around Épernay allow the estate to build mixed-grape wines rather than operating solely as a Blanc de Blancs specialist.
The range is small enough to read clearly. Mélodie en C. and Chardonnay 2012 foreground Chardonnay, Odalie uses all three principal grapes, Juste Rosé brings rosé into the portfolio, and Exhilarante is a special mixed-grape cuvée whose current online presentation contains a vintage inconsistency that should not be silently resolved.
Vineyards and cellar approach
The producer's seven hectares are split between Chardonnay holdings in Avize, Cramant and Oger and Pinot Noir/Meunier vines on the slopes around Épernay. The estate describes lower-yield vineyard work and old vines as important elements of its approach.
In the cellar, the producer states a minimum of three years' ageing on lees. Individual techniques vary by wine: Mélodie en C. is documented as being vinified and matured in temperature-controlled stainless steel, while the current Exhilarante description specifies no malolactic fermentation. That latter detail belongs to Exhilarante and should not be treated as a house-wide rule.
Current and meaningful cuvées
- Odalie — the broad three-grape introduction. The currently documented blend is 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Meunier; those proportions are tied to the current producer description.
- Mélodie en C. — 100% Chardonnay, with current producer material specifying temperature-controlled stainless-steel vinification and ageing.
- Juste Rosé — Chardonnay-led rosé. The producer's current range page states 90% Chardonnay from some of its oldest vines.
- Chardonnay 2012 — a 100% Chardonnay vintage wine from three Côte des Blancs villages. The 2012 year is part of the named current product and should not be rolled forward to another vintage by assumption.
- Exhilarante — a mixed-grape special cuvée documented as 80% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Noir and 10% Meunier, without malolactic fermentation.
Champagne.co analysis
Le Brun-Servenay's most useful distinction is the relationship between its Côte des Blancs core and its smaller black-grape holdings. The estate is not simply a Chardonnay specialist with an incidental rosé: Odalie and Exhilarante show that Pinot Noir and Meunier are deliberate blending tools, while Mélodie en C. and Chardonnay 2012 make the Chardonnay side explicit.
The seven-hectare scale and concentration in Avize, Cramant and Oger also make the old-vine information more meaningful than a generic heritage claim. It helps explain why the producer can present both straightforward Chardonnay and more release-specific vintage expressions without needing a large, sprawling range.
The Exhilarante discrepancy is a useful reminder to buy and catalogue this producer by the bottle actually offered. When a producer's own current pages disagree over a vintage, withholding the year is more accurate than choosing one source arbitrarily.
Buying guidance
Choose Odalie for the broadest introduction to the house's three-grape blending. Mélodie en C. is the straightforward choice for pure Chardonnay, while Chardonnay 2012 is the currently presented vintage Chardonnay and should be bought with that exact year in mind.
For rosé, choose Juste Rosé. Exhilarante is the more specialised mixed-grape option, but buyers and merchants should verify the bottle's vintage rather than relying on the conflicting year labels on the current producer site.
Fresh authoritative recheck completed 2026-08-21 against Le Brun-Servenay's current official heritage and range pages. Current first-party evidence confirms the 1965 formation, seven hectares, approximately 80% Chardonnay in Avize/Cramant/Oger, Pinot Noir and Meunier around Épernay, old vines, three-year minimum lees ageing and the five named current cuvées. The live producer site still conflicts between “Exhilarante 2014” and text describing a 2013 single harvest. Legacy catalogue cautions, source URLs, provenance/compliance commentary and process instructions were removed from consumer copy.
