Wirth-Michel

Editorial profile

Champagne Wirth-Michel is a small family grower based in Moussy, on the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay. The domaine traces its roots to Raoul Bouché, a cooper by trade, and has passed through five generations. Today Antonin Michel carries the estate forward.

The vineyard covers a little over 4 hectares across Moussy, Vinay, Brugny-Vaudancourt and Saint-Martin-d'Ablois. Meunier dominates at 75%, followed by 23% Chardonnay and 2% Pinot Noir. Around 70% of the vines are massal selections.

The estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale and Viticulture Durable en Champagne and states that it uses no chemical herbicides or insecticides.

Why this producer matters

Wirth-Michel is a useful example of a Meunier-led Coteaux Sud d'Épernay grower that has moved beyond one broad family blend. The current range separates reserve-wine Champagne, pure Chardonnay, a three-grape parcel wine and old-vine Meunier.

That structure makes the domaine particularly clear for readers: the same small vineyard can be followed from a house blend into increasingly specific grape and parcel expressions.

Vineyards and cellar approach

The vineyards sit on a varied mix of clay, flint, silt, millstone fragments and Campanian chalk. That geological diversity is spread across four villages rather than concentrated in one slope.

In the cellar, the domaine works with 600-litre barrels, stainless steel, concrete and enamelled steel. Long élevage on fine lees, low intervention, no filtration and natural cold stabilisation are part of the current approach.

A perpetual reserve begun in 2018 is central to the Origines wines and provides a temporal dimension alongside the parcel work.

Current and meaningful cuvées

Origines Brut is the main introduction to the estate. The current French technical page gives 70% Meunier / 30% Chardonnay, 6 g/L dosage, and a blend of current-harvest wine aged in 600-litre barrels with the perpetual reserve begun in 2018.

Origines Extra-Brut follows the same current 70/30 Meunier-Chardonnay framework but is finished at 3 g/L.

Nuances de Blanc is the pure Chardonnay counterpoint, currently 100% Chardonnay and 2 g/L dosage.

Les Rigoblins is a parcel-focused three-grape wine from Vinay, currently 50% Chardonnay, 33% Meunier and 17% Pinot Noir, with 2 g/L dosage. The vines are worked by horse to limit soil compaction and the wine is raised on fine lees in 600-litre barrels.

Les Meuniers de Raoul is the most direct expression of the estate's dominant grape: 100% Meunier, currently 2 g/L dosage, from old family massal-selection parcels planted in 1955 and 1964 and raised in 600-litre barrels.

Champagne.co analysis

Wirth-Michel is best understood as a progression from blend to origin. Origines expresses the wider estate and reserve system. Nuances de Blanc removes Meunier entirely. Les Rigoblins narrows the focus to one Vinay slope, and Les Meuniers de Raoul returns to the family's oldest Meunier material.

The result is a small range with a strong internal logic rather than a collection of unrelated cuvées. Meunier remains the centre of gravity, but Chardonnay and parcel selection provide genuine contrast.

Buying guidance

Start with Origines Brut for the full estate picture, or Origines Extra-Brut for the drier version of that reserve-based style.

Choose Nuances de Blanc for Chardonnay, Les Rigoblins for the three-grape parcel wine, and Les Meuniers de Raoul for the purest old-vine Meunier expression. Use the current French technical pages for release details, because older English pages still show earlier blend and dosage data.
