Billecart-Salmon Cuvée Nicolas François 2008
2008
Billecart-Salmon Cuvée Nicolas François 2008 is the house's prestige vintage cuvée in magnum, a 1.5-litre bottle of the 2008 harvest blended from 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay.
The name explains the ambition. Billecart-Salmon was founded in 1818 in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ by Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon, and this cuvée honours the first of those co-founders. It belongs to a small group of named prestige wines alongside Elisabeth Salmon, the house's prestige rosé, and Louis Salmon, its prestige Blanc de Blancs. Within that trio, Cuvée Nicolas François is the vintage blend, so the year on the label is not a detail but the heart of the wine.
The stated proportions place Pinot Noir in the lead, with Chardonnay as the significant minority partner. That makes this a different proposition from the house's Chardonnay-focused bottles, and a useful counterpoint for readers comparing Billecart-Salmon's prestige range: the same family name, three quite different routes into its top tier.
The house behind it remains independent and family-run. Mathieu Roland-Billecart, of the seventh generation, heads the business alongside Antoine Roland-Billecart, while Florent Nys leads the winemaking, having succeeded François Domi after working with him from 2005. The cellar has been organised to keep parcels and styles distinct: a small thermoregulated-tank cuverie was created in 2000 to improve traceability, oak vinification was renewed in 2010, and 24 large oak casks were added in 2018. Dosage and vessel choices vary substantially across the range, so they should be read cuvée by cuvée rather than assumed.
What makes the house worth knowing is controlled breadth. A drinker can move from Le Réserve and Brut Nature through Le Sous Bois and Le Blanc de Blancs, then into vintage prestige blends such as this one, and finally to Clos Saint-Hilaire, the one-hectare enclosed Pinot Noir parcel in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Cuvée Nicolas François sits near the top of that ladder as the house's statement of a single year.
The magnum format suits a vintage prestige wine meant for occasions and for keeping, and it rewards careful buying. As an older vintage, this bottle's value depends on how it has been stored, so ask about storage history and condition before purchase. Keep the vintage firmly attached to the bottle under consideration: Cuvée Nicolas François is not a standing recipe but a named expression of the 2008 harvest.
