Bonnet-Ponson Blanc de Blancs 2023

Blanc de Blancs 2023 is one of the most revealing wines in the Bonnet-Ponson range because the name hides an unusually important detail: this is not a 100% Chardonnay Champagne. The blend is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Petit Meslier from Vrigny Premier Cru, making the wine a true white-from-white-grapes expression rather than a conventional single-variety Blanc de Blancs. That Petit Meslier component matters because Bonnet-Ponson is one of the growers giving Champagne’s rarer authorised varieties a meaningful role rather than treating them as historical curiosities. The family estate works 10.5 hectares across roughly 50 parcels in Chamery, Vrigny, Coulommes-la-Montagne and Verzenay, with Petit Meslier accounting for a small but visible share of the vineyard. The 2023 vintage is equally important. This is a dated release and should be treated as its own bottle rather than as a standing formula whose proportions automatically carry into another year. The domaine itself combines long family roots with a clearly modern farming programme. Cyril Bonnet joined the estate in 2013, the same year the family began converting the whole vineyard to organic farming, and the first certified harvest followed in 2016. An agroforestry programme begun in 2019 has since added hundreds of trees around and within the vineyard. Within the range, Perpétuelle Zéro Dosage is the broadest introduction to the house, while Petit Mélange gives the clearest route into rare-grape diversity. Blanc de Blancs 2023 sits between those ideas: site-specific enough to highlight Vrigny Premier Cru, but distinctive above all for its 60/40 Chardonnay-Petit Meslier composition. For buyers interested in the less familiar white grapes of Champagne, this is therefore a particularly useful bottle: exact vintage, classified origin and a substantial Petit Meslier component that genuinely shapes the identity of the wine.
