Gounel-Lassalle Esprit Voyageur 1er Cru Brut Nature
Gounel-Lassalle Esprit Voyageur 1er Cru Brut Nature is a no-dosage, Meunier-led Champagne from the family grower at Chigny-les-Roses on the Montagne de Reims.
Gounel-Lassalle Esprit Voyageur 1er Cru Brut Nature has a clear appeal for drinkers who enjoy the expressive possibilities of Meunier and prefer Champagne without added dosage. Produced by a family grower in Chigny-les-Roses Premier Cru, it gives the buyer a distinct proposition: a Meunier-led blend presented in the particularly dry Brut Nature category.
The producer is led by Arnaud and Sophie Gounel, whose story is one of gradually bringing more of the winemaking back under the family's own roof. They took over the family operation in 2002, building on vineyard roots that extend to the nineteenth century. By 2018 the first harvest had been vinified entirely at the estate, allowing more freedom to separate vineyard sources and make individual cellar decisions.
That move helps explain why the current range is more than a list of familiar Champagne styles. Gounel-Lassalle works with both wider blends and wines connected to named parcels. Esprit Voyageur makes a useful introduction to the broader side of the collection, while bottlings such as Dessus la Ville take attention towards a more exact vineyard location. For someone beginning to explore a Premier Cru grower, the difference between those approaches is as interesting as any hierarchy of labels.
The Brut Nature designation is particularly important here. It describes a Champagne without dosage sugar, inviting a different kind of comparison from a conventional Brut. Meunier is another point of interest: the grape has a substantial place in the Montagne de Reims and nearby Marne vineyards, and a Meunier-led expression helps show why it need not be treated solely as a blending component.
Choose Esprit Voyageur for a meal, a tasting of grower Champagnes with different dosage levels or a gift to a wine lover curious about Chigny-les-Roses. It combines a family story, a clearly named Premier Cru origin and two meaningful stylistic decisions: Meunier leadership and Brut Nature dryness.
