Larmandier-Bernier
Larmandier-Bernier Longitude
Larmandier-Bernier Longitude is a 100% Chardonnay Champagne drawn from Vertus, Oger, Avize and Cramant, with 40% perpetual reserve wine in the current release and a restrained 2 g/L dosage.
Larmandier-Bernier Longitude offers a particularly persuasive introduction to one of the Côte des Blancs' distinctive family growers. Rather than isolating a single parcel, it brings together Chardonnay from Vertus, Oger, Avize and Cramant to express a broader view of the estate's vineyards. If you want to understand the producer before exploring its more narrowly defined bottlings, this is an excellent place to begin.
The wine is entirely Chardonnay. In the current release, 40% comes from a perpetual reserve begun in 2004, an important element in a blend that brings different harvests into conversation. The listed dosage is just 2 g/L. Taken together, these details reveal a carefully defined approach: Chardonnay from several Côte des Blancs villages, a meaningful proportion of reserve wine and very little added sweetness. They tell you considerably more about the bottle than a vague promise of elegance.
There is substance behind the estate name. Based in Vertus, Larmandier-Bernier works 19 hectares of its own vines without buying grapes. The Larmandier family has longstanding roots in the area, and the estate has been shaped by sustained changes in farming: herbicides were abandoned in 1992, biodynamic cultivation was adopted across the estate in 1999 and organic certification followed in 2003. Longitude is therefore a useful window onto a producer whose vineyard decisions are central to its identity.
It also makes sense within the range. Latitude provides an alternative perspective on the estate's multi-site blending, while Terre de Vertus, Vieille Vigne du Levant and Les Chemins d'Avize take buyers towards more closely defined origins. That progression is part of the attraction of Larmandier-Bernier: there is a clear route from discovering the grower's overall style to examining individual sites.
Choose Longitude when you want a Chardonnay-led Champagne with an identifiable sense of place and a transparent blend. It works as a serious dinner bottle, a considered present for a Champagne enthusiast or the starting point for an exploration of Côte des Blancs growers. Its appeal is grounded in the villages, the reserve component and the patient farming choices behind it, rather than in an extravagant claim about how every glass must taste.
