Marguet Sapience 2018
2018
Marguet Sapience 2018 is the producer’s prestige bottling for this release, blending 52% Pinot Noir and 48% Meunier from Ambonnay and Cumières/Hautvillers within a project made only in selected vintages.
Marguet Sapience 2018 sits apart from the domaine’s main hierarchy of estate, village and parcel wines. It is a separate prestige project, produced only in selected vintages, and the 2018 release brings together 52% Pinot Noir and 48% Meunier from Ambonnay and Cumières/Hautvillers.
That composition already marks Sapience out within a producer whose home estate is overwhelmingly concentrated in Ambonnay, with a smaller holding in Bouzy. Benoît Marguet works eight hectares in total, and the domaine’s wider range is normally read through increasingly precise levels of origin: Shaman as the broad estate expression, village wines from notable crus, then individual lieux-dits such as Les Crayères, Le Parc, Les Bermonts and Les Saints Remys.
Sapience follows a different route. Rather than simply moving one step further down the parcel hierarchy, it operates alongside it as a prestige programme with its own identity. The 2018 release draws on Pinot Noir and Meunier and links Ambonnay with fruit from Cumières/Hautvillers, making the wine broader in geographic concept than one of Marguet’s single-site bottlings while remaining far more selective than a routine house blend.
The farming background is central to the domaine. Marguet uses biodynamic preparations, plant-based treatments and draft-horse cultivation, with the estate currently associated with both organic agriculture and Demeter biodynamic farming. In the cellar, the house describes gravity handling, lees ageing and gentle production methods, but the most useful way to understand the range remains through the origin and identity of each wine.
For buyers already familiar with Shaman or the Ambonnay parcel wines, Sapience 2018 offers a different perspective on Marguet: not a first bottle, but a deliberately selective prestige release. Its 52/48 Pinot Noir-Meunier blend, the combination of Ambonnay and Cumières/Hautvillers, and the fact that Sapience is not produced every year all make the exact 2018 release essential to understanding what is in the bottle.
